In the time of swords and periwigs and full-skirted coats with flowered lappets—when gentlemen wore ruffles, and gold-laced waistcoats of paduasoy and taffeta—there lived a tailor in Gloucester.

It is Christmas Eve and the mayor must have a new coat to be married on Christmas Day morning, what is a poor tailor to do?

This tailor is very poor indeed, so poor he has barely enough money to feed himself and keep warm. With his last strength he sends out his sly cat Simpkin to fetch him the last twist of pink thread he needs to finish the coat but Simpkin has his eyes on his supper. Only some kind and rather resourceful mice that live in the dresser can save the tailor from certain ruin, will they finish in time and will they keep out of the jaws of the hungry Simpkin?
One of the world’s greatest children’s writers and illustrators, Beatrix Potter created some of the most recognisable characters in English literature, including Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck and Benjamin Bunny.

Today Beatrix Potter's original twenty-three tales are still published by Frederick Warne, alongside a wide range of other formats including baby books, sound books, christening gifts and more. These original editions bring the world of Beatrix Potter to life just as readers have enjoyed them for generations. The Tale of the Pie and the Patty-Pan, the seventh book to be published, is number seventeen in her series of charming stories.

Beatrix Potter is one of the world’s best-loved children’s authors, capturing our imagination for over 100 years with her beautifully illustrated Tales. However, few people are aware of the fascinating woman that Beatrix was or the achievements she accomplished in her lifetime, during an era when ambitious women were not allowed to flourish. An artist, storyteller, botanist, environmentalist, farmer and businesswoman, Potter was a visionary and a trailblazer and left an incredible legacy. From her first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1902) she went on to create a series of stories based around animal characters including Mrs Tiggy-winkle, Mr Jeremy Fisher and Tom Kitten. Her humorous, lively tales and beautiful illustrations have become a natural part of childhood. Since 1984 more than 150 million Beatrix Potter books have been sold around the world, whilst over 2 million Beatrix Potter books are sold every year worldwide – so one Beatrix Potter books sells somewhere in the world every 15 seconds! A source of inspiration was the Lake District where she lived for the last thirty years of her life as a farmer and conservationist.
