This set of cards accompanies the e-book ‘A Day in the Life of a Social Hippo’. It is dedicated to all the social performance and human rights professionals who often feel caught between different expectations of their roles.

The ‘ears of the hippopotamus’ is a metaphor encouraging us to look below the surface to understand what is going on. This is my desire, aided by the 24 beautiful hippos illustrated by Laura Stagno. I refer to them as the 8 Role Trinities. Each Trinity relates to one of 8 typical tasks performed by a Social Practitioner. A Trinity consists of three roles that might be playing out under the surface: the Social Practitioner’s view of their own role when performing that task; the ‘internal’ view of their colleagues, management or client; and the ‘external’ view held by the community.

Being pulled into multiple roles to meet divergent expectations can create tensions. I wish to convey that the divergence is not something that needs ‘fixing’, instead, it reveals valid perspectives to be made explicit, understood and balanced.

The hippos are also available in a box card set. My intent is that the images be used as a tool to provoke reflection, dialogue, and new insights being brought to the surface.

You can be creative with however you choose to use the cards. We use them in our coaching practice and training at Community Insights Group.
